2008 Fellow, Douglas Irvine to Present his Report to the New Hampshire Community

Sharon Arts Gallery: Saturday, June 21, 2008 11am – 2pm

Composer & Sound Artist, Douglas Irvine presents "Solstice, Ambient Soundscapes from Ancient and Modern Sources" at the Sharon Arts Gallery, Saturday, June 21st from 11 AM - 2 PM. (see attachment).

The event marks the debut of the artist's new works for ancient Near Eastern instruments, performed to the backdrop of electronic soundscapes. Some of Irvine's instruments include reconstructed harps, lyres, lutes, flutes, Middle Eastern hand drums, as well as percussion instruments from Africa.

Irvine describes his performance this way, "The idea is to fill the gallery space with layers of music and sound. I hope to create an auditory journey that juxtaposes ancient musical traditions with 21st century ambient drones and rhythms."

The structure of the event is informal, and visitors can come and go as they please. "I enjoy playing site specific spaces," says Irvine, "since they provide an alternative to traditional venues and offer people a chance to see and hear some unusual instruments up close."

His published works include the CD, Ambient Egypt, Sounds from Ancient Sources, which will be available for purchase at the gallery. Irvine’s Report to the New Hampshire Community is free to the public and made possible by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts and the Sharon Arts Gallery.
